Expression lines develop through everyday facial movement, natural changes in the skin as we age, and the way the two work together. Select an area of the face to see how lines develop there. Every treatment journey begins with a consultation with a registered nurse.
-
Forehead lines are the horizontal creases that appear when you raise your eyebrows. Similar vertical lines can form between the brows when you frown or concentrate. The muscles that lift and draw the brows together fold the skin in the same places, many times a day. With age, the skin makes less collagen and elastin, the natural proteins that keep skin firm and help it spring back. Sun exposure wears them down faster, so creases soften more slowly. Over time, these lines can remain when your face is at rest.
-
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than anywhere else on the face, and it is almost always moving. Smiling, laughing and squinting crease the outer corners again and again, creating the fine lines that fan outwards, often called crow's feet. As skin loses its natural bounce, some of these lines can remain visible even after the smile has faded.
-
Across the cheeks and around the mouth, fine lines begin as shallow creases that appear with an expression and fade when your face is still. With less collagen and elastin, the natural proteins that keep skin firm and springy, the skin recovers more slowly after each movement. Sun, smoking and ongoing stress can wear these proteins down faster. Sleeping on one side can press creases into the same areas night after night. Over time, fine lines can deepen into wrinkles that stay when your face is at rest.
-
On the neck, ageing often shows as horizontal lines and as bands that appear when the neck tenses. The skin here is thin and moves each time you turn, speak or swallow. Looking down at a screen folds the neck in the same place for long periods. Stress can lead to clenching, sometimes during sleep, which can leave the jaw feeling tense and heavy. Sun exposure and a gradual loss of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm, mean these creases can remain at rest.
How a line forms.
It happens slowly, over many years, in three stages.
-
Around 30Repeated movement
Every smile, frown and squint folds the skin along the same lines, day after day and year after year.
-
Around 70Less natural support
With age, skin makes less of the collagen and elastin that keep it firm. Sun, smoking and stress wear them down faster, so skin springs back more slowly.
-
Around 70Lines at rest
Creases that once disappeared begin to stay. They start as fine lines and can deepen into wrinkles over time.

Wrinkle reduction questions, answered.
Which lines can be treated?
Lines that form when your face moves: frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet at the corners of the eyes. Your nurse can also assess lines and bands of the lower face and neck, and jaw tension from clenching.
Why does it start with a consultation?
Treatment for expression lines is prescription-only, so a registered nurse assesses you first, with a doctor overseeing any prescription. The consultation covers your history, medications and goals, and whether treatment suits you.
Who performs treatment?
Registered nurses at the clinic, under medical oversight. You meet the nurse who treats you at your consultation.
Why can't I see prices?
Australian rules don't allow clinics to advertise prices for prescription-only treatments. You get a written quote at your consultation, before any treatment.
Am I suitable?
Most adults are, but not while pregnant or breastfeeding, or with certain medical conditions. Your nurse checks your history and medications at consultation.
How much does wrinkle reduction cost in Northcote?
The cost of wrinkle reduction is given as a written quote at your consultation, not online. Australian rules don't allow clinics to advertise prices for prescription-only treatments, and the cost also depends on your anatomy and goals. At our Northcote clinic you get the quote with your plan, before any treatment, with no obligation to go ahead.
