Skin texture is shaped by how the skin renews itself, by the collagen that supports it, and by how it heals after a breakout or too much sun. Select an area of the face to see how texture, pores, scarring and fine lines develop there. Every treatment journey begins with a consultation with a registered nurse.
-
A smooth surface depends on two things: collagen, the natural protein that keeps skin firm, and a steady renewal of the skin cells at the surface. Pores are the small openings that release oil. They can look larger when the skin around them loses support, or when oil builds up inside them. Pore size is also partly inherited, and sun exposure and time can both wear down the support around each pore, so the surface feels less even.
-
When a breakout heals, the skin repairs the area by making new collagen, the natural protein that keeps skin firm. If too little is made, a shallow dip can remain. If the repair pulls the skin downwards, a gentle, rolling dip can form. Deeper breakouts, and picking at them, make this more likely. Some marks are not dips at all, but flat patches of darker colour left behind once the skin has healed.
-
The skin under the eye is thinner than on most of the face and has few oil glands, so it creases more easily. Smiling, laughing and squinting fold it in the same places again and again. With age the body makes less collagen and elastin, the natural proteins that keep skin firm and help it spring back, and sun exposure wears them down faster. Over time, fine lines that once faded can begin to stay.
-
Skin renews itself more slowly as we age. Dry cells then stay on the surface for longer, where they scatter light unevenly, so skin can look flat rather than bright. Sun exposure, dryness and tiredness can add to this. Dullness is often a combination of these factors rather than a single cause, which is why a nurse looks at your skin as a whole.
How skin texture changes.
It develops gradually, in three stages.
-
Around 20Steady renewal
Healthy skin keeps its surface even by renewing its cells and by making collagen, the natural protein that keeps it firm.
-
Around 20Support is disturbed
Breakouts, sun exposure, dryness and time can break down collagen or slow renewal. Healing can also leave dips or marks.
-
Around 45An uneven surface
Pores, dips, marks and rough patches can show where the skin's support or renewal has changed, often building up gradually.
SkinPen® microneedling is one of the options a registered nurse may discuss with you at your consultation. This information is general and is not personal medical advice. Every face and every skin is different. At your consultation, a registered nurse will assess your skin, your history and your goals before recommending a plan.
What to expect.
A consultation first
Thirty minutes with a registered nurse, who looks at your skin and your history, and explains the risks.
Numbing, then the treatment
Numbing cream is applied first. The treatment itself takes about 40 minutes.
Aftercare explained
Your nurse takes you through caring for your skin afterwards, and you leave with written aftercare.
Reviewed as you go
Your nurse explains at your consultation what may be possible for your skin. Results vary from person to person and are never guaranteed.
Microneedling questions, answered.
What does microneedling do to your skin?
Microneedling makes thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. The skin then repairs itself, including by making new collagen and elastin. Microneedling is designed to prompt this, and it may help texture, fine lines and the look of pores change gradually over a course. Results vary.
What should I avoid after microneedling?
For the first day, skip makeup, exercise, saunas and swimming. For a week, avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs and direct sun, and wear SPF 50 every day. Your nurse gives you written aftercare.
Who is microneedling for?
SkinPen® microneedling may suit people with uneven texture, enlarged pores, shallow and rolling acne scars, fine lines, and flat, tired-looking skin. It isn't suitable during pregnancy or with an active skin infection. Your nurse decides whether it suits you at a consultation at our Northcote clinic. Results vary.
How much does microneedling cost?
Full-face microneedling starts from $320 a session. Adding the neck is $59 and the décolletage $89. A course of three full-face and neck sessions is currently $750. You get an exact quote at your consultation.
Does microneedling hurt?
Numbing cream goes on first, so most people feel pressure and a light scratching rather than pain. Bony areas like the forehead and jawline can feel sharper.
