How a face changes shape.

A face changes shape from the inside. Over the years, the bone beneath the skin, the soft padding that sits over it and the skin itself all shift, and they do not shift at the same pace. Select an area of the face to see what changes there. Every treatment journey begins with a consultation with a registered nurse.

An illustration of a woman's face, neck and shoulders from the front, split down the middle: the left side is aged about 25, with full rounded cheeks, smooth temples and a defined jaw, and the right side about 60, with gentle hollowing under the eye, flatter cheeks and softer temples and jaw
  • The fullness of the cheeks and temples comes from the bone beneath, the soft pads of fat that sit over it and the skin on top. With age the bone slowly changes shape, and the pads of fat can thin and settle lower. Skin that makes less collagen and elastin, the natural proteins that keep it firm and help it spring back, supports them less well. Genetics and weight change also play a part, so the cheeks and temples can look flatter or more hollow.

  • The skin under the eye is thin, and it rests over the hollow where the cheek meets the eye. As the cheek loses support from below, that hollow can look deeper and catch more shadow. Genetics, tiredness and sun exposure can also change how this area looks, and not every shadow is a change in volume. This is one reason a registered nurse assesses each person individually rather than by appearance alone.

  • The shape of the lips comes from the soft tissue within them and the skin around them, and it differs naturally from person to person. With age, the skin around the mouth thins as it makes less collagen and elastin. The lips can lose some of their fullness, and the lip line can look less defined. Sun exposure and smoking wear down these proteins faster, and the everyday movement of the mouth can add fine lines around the lips.

  • The jawline is set by bone, with fat and skin laid over it. As the bone changes and the fat and skin soften and loosen, the line from chin to ear can look less defined. The skin under the jaw and along the neck can look looser, because it holds its shape less well as collagen and elastin decline. Weight change, sun exposure and genetics all influence how and when this shows.

How volume changes.

Three parts of the face change together, slowly, over many years.

  1. Close-up of both eyes and the nose, about 25 on the left and about 60 on the rightAround 25 and 60

    The frame shifts

The bones of the face slowly reshape with age, so the frame that holds everything above it begins to change. This happens gradually, and at a different pace for each person.

  2. Close-up of the cheek and under the eye at about 60Around 60

    Padding thins and moves

The soft pads of fat in the cheeks, temples and under the eyes can thin and slip down. The skin is left with less support beneath it.

  3. Close-up of the lips, chin and neck, about 25 on the left and about 60 on the rightAround 25 and 60

    Skin holds its shape less

Skin makes less collagen and elastin with age, and sun and smoking wear them down faster. Hollows and softer edges can then show more.

Volumising questions, answered.

What do volumising treatments address?

Changes in facial volume and contour, which happen naturally with age, weight change and genetics. Common areas are the cheeks, temples, chin, jawline and lips. Treatment here is prescription-only, so whether it suits you is discussed at a consultation with a registered nurse.

Why does it start with a consultation?

Volumising treatment is prescription-only, so a registered nurse assesses you first, with a doctor overseeing any prescription. The consultation covers your history, medications and goals, and whether treatment suits you.

How will it look?

Your nurse looks at your proportions and favours a conservative plan, reviewed over time. Results vary, and your nurse tells you what's realistic at consultation.

Why can't I see prices?

Australian rules don't allow clinics to advertise prices for prescription-only treatments. You get a written quote at your consultation, before any treatment.

Am I suitable?

Suitability depends on your history. Treatment is not suitable while pregnant or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection in the area, or with certain medical conditions. Your nurse checks your history and medications at consultation.

How much do volumising treatments cost in Northcote?

The cost of volumising treatment is given as a written quote at your consultation, not online. Australian rules don't allow clinics to advertise prices for prescription-only treatments, and the cost also depends on your anatomy and goals. At our Northcote clinic you get the quote with your plan, before any treatment, with no obligation to go ahead.
