Cellulite develops from the way skin, fat and connective tissue sit together beneath the surface. Genetics, hormones, circulation, weight change and age all influence how visible it is. Select a point on the illustration to see what is happening at each layer. Every treatment journey begins with a consultation with a registered nurse.
-
Cellulite is the dimpled, uneven texture that can appear on the surface of the skin. It is very common and is not a sign of being unhealthy. The dimples form where the skin is held down from below while the fat beside it pushes upward. Family history, hormones and the skin itself all affect how visible this is. With age, the body makes less collagen and elastin, the natural proteins that keep skin firm and help it spring back. Thinner, less firm skin tends to show the pattern more clearly.
-
Under the skin, fat is stored in small rounded chambers, and the thighs are a common place to see cellulite. How much fat you store, and where, is influenced by genetics and hormones. When weight is gained, the chambers fill out and press harder against the skin above them. This raises soft bumps between the dimples. Weight loss can change how much fat the chambers hold, so how the surface looks can shift over time.
-
Fine bands of connective tissue run up through the fat and tether the skin to the layer below, a little like the buttons on a cushion. Where a band holds the skin down and fat pushes up beside it, the skin dimples. The layout of these bands differs from person to person, which is one reason cellulite looks different on different people. The buttocks are another common place to see it.
-
The abdomen and upper arms are built from the same layers: skin, fat held in chambers, bands of connective tissue, and a deeper layer of tissue the bands are anchored into. Over time, several things can change how the surface looks. Weight change and hormones can alter the fat. Circulation, the flow of blood through the area, may also play a part. With age, skin has less of the collagen and elastin that keep it firm, so it holds its shape less well.
How a dimple forms.
It builds quietly beneath the surface, in three stages.
-
Fat chambersFat is held in chambers
Just under the skin, fat sits in small rounded chambers. How much you carry, and where, is shaped by genetics, hormones and changes in weight.
-
Connective bandsBands tether the skin
Fine bands of connective tissue run up between the chambers and anchor the skin to the layer below. Their layout varies from person to person.
-
Skin surfaceThe surface dimples
Where a band holds the skin down and fat pushes up beside it, the surface dimples. Age, hormones and weight change can alter how much this shows.

Cellulite questions, answered.
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite forms where fibrous bands under the skin pull down while fat pushes up, which creates dimpling. It's very common, especially in women, and isn't a sign of being unhealthy.
How does our cellulite treatment work?
We use Sylfirm X RF microneedling. Fine needles carry radiofrequency energy into the deeper skin. It is designed to support collagen the skin already makes, which may change how the dimpling looks. Results vary.
Is cellulite treatment permanent?
No treatment removes cellulite for good. A course may change how it looks, and your nurse may suggest maintenance sessions. Results vary. Weight change and hormones can affect it over time.
How much does cellulite treatment cost?
Upper legs start from $399 a session, or $469 with the buttocks. A course of five is $1,750 and a course of eight is $2,520. Your nurse confirms the course at your consultation.
Does losing weight get rid of cellulite?
Not on its own. Cellulite comes from the structure of the skin and connective tissue, so it shows at any weight. Your nurse can talk through what may affect it for you.
Who is cellulite treatment for?
Cellulite treatment is for the dimpled look of cellulite, most often on the thighs and buttocks, and also on the abdomen and upper arms. Cellulite is very common, especially in women. It isn't suitable during pregnancy or with an active skin infection. Your nurse assesses each area at our Northcote clinic and explains what change is realistic.
